On February 22nd, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, both engineers at Garmin, were shot in a bar in Kansas. Ian Grillot intervened valiantly and was also shot. Unfortunately Srinivas was killed, but both Alok and Ian are recovering. For more details, see this article.
There’s no doubt in my mind that this was a hate crime made all the worse by alcohol and our current political climate. No one should ever be in danger of any harm simply because they are from a different place, worship differently, or look in any way different. Our differences make us stronger, not weaker, and they should be celebrated.
I applaud Ian Grillot for standing up for these two individuals who were singled out because someone thought they were Middle Eastern (they were from India). Although the fact that anyone was harmed (and that Srinivas didn’t survive) is sad, it is incredibly heartening to know that there are still individuals who will do the right thing and stand up to this kind of hate. Truly, Ian is an American Hero.
The GoFundMe’s for Srinivas’ family and for Alok Madasani are now closed, but Ian’s is still up. If you can spare a few dollars, please, help him out.
Women in Tech
Women are vitally important to tech, and yet, as the following two posts illustrate, we must do so much better. To those companies and individuals who are embracing diversity and rejecting hate in all its forms, thank you.
